3 Ways to Beat Knee Pain Before it Starts

What to do when experiencing a Knee Pain

Protect your knee from further pain or injury. If you have been injured or if you just notice that it hurts to put weight on your knee, the first thing you should do is protect your knee by getting off of it.

Do not attempt to walk or run through the pain. If your knee hurts from moving, then continuing to run or even walk may make it even worse.

3 Ways to Deal with Knee Pain

For most forms of knee pain, applying ice is the first step to recovery. Ice also acts as an anesthetic to ease the pain. Place the ice pack or ice cubes inside a plastic bag. Just make sure the ice pack is covered in a towel, so it does not come in straight contact with your skin.

Compress your knee using a bandage

Compression will physically reduce the pain, swelling and enhance blood drainage from that area.

Using an elastic bandage, wrap the knee starting from below the knee, and stretch the bandage up past the top of the knee. The wrap should not be too tight or otherwise, it will cut off circulation to the leg and ankle. Always remove the bandage before going to sleep.

Wear a knee brace

If you have knee pain due to injury or surgery, a knee brace can help stabilize your knee while it heals and to prevent additional knee injury by having your knees aligned. Using a knee brace may also help to protect you against future knee injuries.

Symptoms of Knee Pain

Knee pain is quite an indefinite term, therefore, the symptoms will depend upon the type of injury.

Some of the common symptoms are:

  • Constant pain in the knee joint

  • Experiencing a sudden pain when using the knee

  • Dull burning sensation

  • Swelling

  • Tenderness around the joint

Preventing Knee Pain

While there is something you can do to prevent an unexpected injury or recurring knee pain, you can make small lifestyle changes to lessen the pain.

Always warm up before doing any kind of activity. Stretch your quadriceps and hamstrings before and after a workout.

Select a low-impact exercise or mix low-impact exercises with high-impact exercises to give your knees a break.

Lose weight to take that extra pressure off your knees.

Avoid walking on rough roads. Stick to a flat paved surface such as a track or walking area.

Use knee braces to get support. You can also try shoe inserts that help handle gait problems.

Replace your running shoes regularly to ensure proper support and protection.
